Here’s what it’s really like to start an IT business in the UK from scratch
Starting a business from scratch is equal parts exciting and intimidating—and I should know, because I’m doing it right now.
After years working IT helpdesk roles, I decided it was time to build something of my own. Atlas Virtual is the start of that vision: a one-person IT and web services company where personal service comes first. No ticket queues. No auto-replies. Just real support from someone who listens.
So what’s it like at the beginning? Here’s what I’ve learned in just the first few weeks:
1. Lessons from Starting My IT Business Solo in the UK
It’s easy to overthink everything—from your logo to your homepage wording. But launching a basic site and sharing your first Fiverr gig is what really sets things in motion. Progress over perfection.
2. You Don’t Need to Know Everything
I’m not an expert in everything (yet), but I am confident in the services I offer—WordPress sites, hosting, and IT support. I’m building as I go and learning along the way. That’s the beauty of solo work—it’s a journey, not a product.
3. People Appreciate Realness
Clients connect with personal service. I let them know it’s just me behind the screen, and that every site, support ticket, and email gets my full attention. That honesty has already made a difference.
This blog is where I’ll share the behind-the-scenes of building Atlas Virtual—what’s working, what I’m learning, and maybe a few mistakes I’ll laugh about later.
If you’re starting something too, or just curious what it’s like building a tech business from the ground up, follow along. And if you need a hand with anything digital—I’m here, and I’ve got the coffee ready.
